Easing the first day jitters

The first day of school can be a very exciting day, but for a lot of kids they can feel worried or anxious about new experiences and about what to expect.

Let your child know that their feelings, whether nerves or excitement, about the start of school are normal. Everyone, even adults, struggle to get back into old routines. Transitions can be very challenging for a lot of children and worrying about the unknown can exacerbate their nerves. Knowing they are not alone in their experiences and feelings will help your child feel safe, heard, and understood.

Having conversations ahead of time can help your child mentally prepare for their first day of school. Whether they are new the school or just changing grades and classrooms, there is often an adjustment period for children.

Support your child by:

  • Talk about your child’s new teachers and what to expect of the new school year
  • Discuss new or changing routines, like riding the bus and packing lunches
  • Practice driving by the school to help your child get a feel for the commute and see the school in person
  • Create social stories together and read them in the weeks leading up to the start of school

Who doesn’t like shopping for new things?! Children can build for the new year around choosing their school supplies and having ownership of the shopping process. Choosing their own supplies and backpack allows children to show off their personality and get them invested in their learning – by making them excited to use their new supplies.

Routines Matter

Preparing for a new school year.

The first few days of a new school year can be a big adjustment after your summer break. Help yourself get back into the school routine with these tips and tricks.

number one

Bump back bedtime

Reboot your child’s bedtime by tucking them in 10 minutes earlier each night during the two weeks leading up to school.

number two

Reestablish morning routines

Practice getting dressed before breakfast and adjusting awake time to get back into the swing of things.

number three

Put an end to grazing

For the two weeks leading up to school, start getting your child back in the habit of eating meals and snacks at more consistent intervals and at the table.

Organize school essentials

Gather everything needed for school, including packing lunches and laying out clothes and shoes the night before to help the morning routine run smoother.

Routines Matter

Give your child a sense of control over their routine

Kids thrive on routine because it gives them a sense of predictability in their lives.

  • Talk about the parts of your school routine. Ask your child what they feel are the most important things to do.

  • Talk about what is working and what is not in their routine. Find out what the hardest parts of the morning are for them.

  • Create a responsibility list or chart, including both your child’s responsibilities and yours. Consider what your child needs help with and what they can do independently.

  • Consider creating visuals that help your child go through their routine independently. This might include a checklist of things to take with them when they leave or simply the steps of getting dressed and brushing their teeth.

  • Praise your child when they complete their routine independently and offer gentle reminders as needed. Praise the process, making it more likely that your child initiates the steps on their own and feels a sense of pride in their accomplishments.
