Last Day Q&A: Halloween Candy

Child Care Answers
October 31, 2024

From Trick to Treat: Our take on Halloween candy hits and misses

The excitement of costumes and spooky decorations on Halloween is matched only by the thrill of trick-or-treating. But, let’s be honest –  while some candies are instant favorites, others can feel like a trick in disguise. From classic chocolate bars to those infamous candies that leave us scratching our heads (and maybe a little disappointed), our sweet tooth leads us on a delightful journey through the best and worst Halloween treats. Join us as we explore the sugary spectrum of Halloween candy, celebrating the beloved and cringing at the questionable!

Kristin, Communications Manager

I’m that weirdo who loves Almond Joys, but my kids can’t stand them, so they automatically fall under the “mom tax.” On the other hand, I can’t stand anything sour—don’t even think about slipping a Warhead or Sour Patch Kid into my stash!

Lucy, Multicultural Program Resource Navigator

The worst? Candy corn. The best? Reese’s and Twix!

Michelle, Community Engagement Manager

The WORST Halloween candy has to be Good N Plenty! Black licorice definitely gives you the side eye. On the other hand, the BEST candy for me are the fun-sized Twizzlers—especially the “fat” ones that come in a pack of two!

Mollie, Executive Director

Best: Kit Kats, Twix, Almond Joys
Worst: Butterfinger, Candy Corn

Lane, Human Resources Manager

The best candy has to be Twix bars. Seriously, come over to my house and I’ll hook your kiddos up with the full-sized versions! I also love tossing Milk Duds into a bowl of warm popcorn; it’s the perfect combo. On the flip side, the absolute worst candy has to be candy corn. How do people even eat that stuff?

Allie, Program Resource Navigator

The best is definitely Reese’s, while the worst has to be Swedish Fish!

Sarah, Community Engagement Specialist

I used to love going trick-or-treating as a kid, and honestly, I’d still hit the streets if I didn’t get those funny looks! My all-time favorite treat has to be banana Laffy Taffy. I just can’t resist them! On the flip side, the absolute worst thing I ever received was an apple. Don’t get me wrong, apples have their time and place, but getting a mushy one (which is always the case) instead of candy? No thanks!

 Julie, Program Resource Manager

The best candies are definitely Snickers and Reese’s! As for the worst, I’d have to say Tootsie Rolls, candy corn, and Milk Duds take the cake.

Lauren, Family Engagement Specialist

As a kid, I loved coming home, spreading out my candy, and trading with my brother. Now, all the treats go into a single tub, and we toss out the “junk.” Almond Joys always fall under my “mom tax”, and the kids know to hand over their Swedish Fish to their dad. Honestly, most of the mini chocolate bars disappear after the kids go to bed—Snickers and red wine are a perfect match! As for the immediate trash pile, it includes Milk Duds, Twizzlers, and Jawbreakers.

Skylar, Administrative Assistant

Best: Reese’s. Worst: Swedish Fish and Milk Duds. To be fair, Reese’s is a year-round favorite for me!

Rosy, Multicultural Family Engagement Specialist

In no particular order:

  • Best: Butterfinger, War Heads, Snickers, Sour Punch Straws, Sour Skittles, Lemon Heads, Peanut Butter-filled M&Ms, Nerds Gummy Clusters, Fruit by the Foot.
  • Worst: Frooties, Strawberry Bon Bons, Candy Corn, Banana-flavored Laffy Taffy, Circus Peanuts, Smarties, Tootsie Rolls, Dots, Milky Way bars.
